September 2024 – On my first day back at work in India after renewing my visa, I faced a significant task: I had to fire four senior employees.
In my seven years in a managerial role in the Philippines, termination was rare and carried significant weight. Labor laws, such as the provisions under Republic Act No. 6713, offer strong protection to employees, particularly in government positions. Terminating an employee requires proven grounds like corruption or violations of ethical standards. This legal framework ensures fairness and mandates due process, providing employees the opportunity to defend themselves before any dismissal decisions are made. Such procedures ensure the protection of workers’ rights and career futures, making termination a serious and carefully considered action.
But in India, the dynamic is entirely different.
Terminating employees here seemed surprisingly casual. Dismissed employees get over it as soon as they walk out of the door, and they won’t condemn you for doing that. Some even reaches out later to ask about rejoining, as though nothing had happened. This resilience was fascinating to observe.

Upon further reflection, I realized one striking similarity among those I had hired and fired: they all had “outstanding resumes.”
According to Forbes India, the job market in India is intensely competitive. With an unemployment rate of 7.8%, millions are actively seeking jobs. While the country added 46.6 million new jobs in 2023–2024, the sheer size of the population creates significant pressure on available opportunities. In such an environment, a standout resume is not just helpful—it’s essential.
9 Simple Steps to build Outstanding Resume
In fairness, most Indian professionals are skilled and hardworking. I recall working with two brilliant Indian scientists at the UN World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, where their inputs in weekly meetings were my favorite part.

However, during my hiring experiences in India, I noticed a tendency among candidates to overpromise. Many inflate their years of experience and responsibilities, and even fresh graduates confidently negotiate salaries in interview.
This intense competition and overemphasis on “experiences” highlight a critical truth: the quality of your resume can determine your fate in the job market.
A resume doesn’t have to be perfect; it simply needs to stand out. Unfortunately, many candidates still submit poorly-written or template-based resumes that fail to make an impression. However, I’ve seen how a carefully revamped resume can transform opportunities.
